MED REVIEW MONDAY
Furosemide aka Lasix is probably the most commonly used diuretic. It is used to reduce body water content (usually by inducing urination) for two conditions: hypertension or edema. It is the #1 treatment for edema associated with congestive heart failure (aka left-sided) but is also used for patients with cirrhosis or renal impairment. It is a loop-diuretic, meaning it acts on the Loop of Henle in the kidney. As it is NOT a potassium-sparing diuretic, the most common adverse effect is electrolyte imbalance – patients’ labs should be monitored as well as input & output. The word lasix stands for “lasts six hours,” referring to the duration of the drug.
